They couldn’t explain why it
was that ordinary everyday objects
wouldn’t just go up in smoke. It
was quite anomalous. Inert matter
just lies there in a kind of steady state, ticking over silently in a
metaphysical sort of way but this ordinary and plain fact of experience was incomprehensible to physics.
