Prayers that maybe make God vomit

Romney shill and coal boss Robert E. Murray, a major pollutor,  prayed thus before his assembled underlings before laying the suckers off:

Dear Lord:
The American people have made their choice. They have decided that America must change its course, away from the principals of our Founders. And, away from the idea of individual freedom and individual responsibility. Away from capitalism ...

The Reverend Murray

Is There a Linguist in the House?

We earlier witnessed those heroic beings, the Linguists, profiled in outline against an evening sky, saving the world for Democracy:

The latest example is currently in movie theatres, in the fine film “Argo”.
Here, a half-dozen American employees of our Embassy in Tehran, managed to escape the hostage-taking, and are hiding out in the house of a Canadian diplomat.  Tempers fray.   One guy in particular is a bit of a carbuncle, and resists the roles thrust on them by CIA guy Ben Affleck (true story).   Only, when push comes to shove, and the group is taking heavy flack from the Revolutionary Guards, the guy pipes up in Farsi -- the only one of the group that speaks it -- and saves the day.

The typical Hollywood reflex is:  black-sheep/ugly-duckling turns out to be a swan, but usually in some physically heroic way.   Fluency in Farsi is not normally the ticket to stardom.   So when linguists see a scene like this, they tend to become hard in body-parts normally flaccid.

Good flick;  don’t miss it.

Another astounding development from a European court

The world is filled with incompetence and negligence;  one would have to be a saint, not occasionally to daydream, that the culprits might get what-for.  A fine;  a demotion; perhaps a pie in the face.  But not, in general, a prison term.   Hence we were taken aback at the recent action by an Italian court, sentencing several scientists for failing to predict an earthquake.  Mais alors -- vous exagérez !

And now, this just in from France:

French political figure Martine Aubry is being charged with manslaughter for deaths caused by asbestos.   The basis for singling her out is that she held a labor post in the 1980s; yet at that time, asbestos was still legal -- France didn’t get around to banning it until 1997.   So perhaps you might blame the legislature -- but Aubry?

Strangely, the readers’ comments are not similarly shocked.  They are either anti-Aubry, or joking, or just off-topic.   I may be missing something.

[Update 7 Nov]  More details here:
http://www.lefigaro.fr/actualite-france/2012/11/07/01016-20121107ARTFIG00001-amiante-martine-aubry-mise-en-examen.php?m_i=eTheKOO%2BwF8Awh_JlL_INSNQiJpAJPPqZ7MclzuDSVQDOE2e_
Fun factoid:  Both the accusing magistrate and the defendent in this case  are women.

[Update 13 November 2012]
Pour la première fois en France, une psychiatre répond d'«homicide involontaire» pour n'avoir pas diagnostiqué la maladie dont souffrait l'un de ses patients, lequel, dans une crise délirante, a assassiné le compagnon de sa grand-mère.

Dr Justice leads in early voting

As we remarked here,

a little-noticed Supreme Court decision (Cauchy v. Riemann, 2010) has rewritten the political calculus in the United States.  Mindful of the inevitable (and endless) challenges  in backward areas like Florida and Ohio, the Court vowed to spare the nation a re-run of November 2000:  the outcome this year goes strictly by the popular vote.   This detail becomes key when you consider that Antarctica -- which, like Puerto Rico, is (in part) an American Overseas Territory -- is likewise enfranchized, its aboriginal inhabitants (the penguins) having been granted voting privileges out of simple racial fairness.  And there are lots, and lots, of penguins.

Early returns (unofficial vote totals)

            Justice  --  5 billion
            Obama -- bupkes
            That other guy -- bupkes

Civil Rights groups were quick to hail the imminent victory of the nation’s first Penguin President.

Adoring crowds have already assembled beneath the brooding aspect of the WDJ   Fortress of Solitude.  The Doctor then appeared briefly on the balcony, and a cry went up -- "Speech!  Speech!"
But then had to report:  "The First Lady has indicated that I need to take out the recyclables.  Catch you later."

~

When the Doctor re-emerged, he announced that, upon reflection, he didn’t want to be President after all, since it would mean living in Washington D.C., which is awfully crowded.   Disappointed, the crowds dispersed for an evening of caroling and looting.

Later in the evening, Dr Justice met with President Obama, over a few beers (in the case of the Doctor, quite a few), and formally conceded the race.  In gratitude, the President offered Dr J his pick of any post in the new administration.  Dr Justice has accordingly been appointed Emir of Antarctica.

Last-Minute Romney Revisions

On Monday, the Romney campaign debuted a new slogan,

“A new tomorrow begins tomorrow.”

Hastily revising in view of changed conditions, and with a view towards possible future developments, the campaign has issued its new watchword:

“A new tomorrow begins today.  Tomorrow, it shall have begun yesterday; and the day after that, the day before.  And so on.”

~

In a surprise development, the former governor and former moderate announced that he would not  after all  use his first day in office to declare war on Iran.  Instead, he will launch a nuclear strike against Iraq.  “Let’s do it right this time.”
His enthusiastic base agreed.  "Whatever!"

The State of the Nation: a post-Hallowe’en report

Our county has long had a “Choose Civility” campaign -- green bumper-stickers on hybrids and Volvos  as far as the eye can see.  It always struck me as lame:  anyone who would be influenced by such a genteel appeal  would already be civil to begin with;  nor can one easily picture the citizen, chin on fist and finger to lips, thinking: “Hmm … Civility … Barbarism … Civility … Barbarism … Hmm …….”
[For analysis of a similar such pitch, this one offering a choice between Civilization and Savagery, click here: http://worldofdrjustice.blogspot.com/2012/10/enthymeme-alert.html ]

However, it may have had an effect.  This Hallowe’en was the most … civil in years.
We always offer a choice of several substantial candies, but each child is siupposed to take just one.   And this year, everyone, even the teenagers, hewed to this rule.  Indeed the teens, this time, often added things like “Thank you, sir” and “Happy Hallowe’en".  (Really, I could die tonight, the nation’s future is in good hands.)
There was just one semi-exception -- and that, of the rule-proving kind. ...

A tiny boy, who had just that day turned two, borne about in his father’s arms, was experiencing his very first Hallowe’en.  He was quite excited.  I handed him a candy-bar, at which his face lit up;  and his father put it in a little bag.  But the boy, straining against restraint, his eyes as big as saucers, cantilevered forward, both chubby arms with flapping fingers  outstretched towards the brimming bowl, with its unimaginable wealth of colorful candies.  “Now now, just one,” I gently admonished;  and his father echoed this admonition.

So, what have we here:  a little greedy-guts?  Perhaps -- but this is greed -- if greed it be -- absolutely pure and unalloyed, with no invidious admixture, along the lines of “I want more than Bobby gets”  or “Having all these goodies makes me King of the Mountain.   No, it is rather that original archaic nisus that propels all creatures to avail themselves of such plenty as they might stumble upon, in a world punctuated by times of want.  Reese’s Pieces had been few and far between during the last glaciation;  and our little cavebaby or troglo-tot  understandably wished to take on provisions while they were to be had.  Nor, in such a frame of mind, would such pernickity precision arithmetic as “Just one” have any cognitive meaning, let alone moral force:  surely the tyke had already quite forgotten the piece his father had stashed in the bag.   As soon bid the bunny shun the carrot, or the babe  the breast.

We are not born civil, nor civilized, but must be patiently, persistently socialized, first by our mother and father, and later by society at large.   My bet is that this tot is well on track, to himself be making the rounds, a generation from now, with his own squirming offspring in tow -- possibly on airborne scooters, or on Mars, who knows that the future may have in store;  but some things don’t change:
“Just one, little fellow;  just one.”

[Footnote, which it pains me to report:  Not everywhere is the picture so rosy.
Just in the next county over, as a friend tells it, the children who came to her door were mostly well-behaved, but in a couple of cases  the mom reached over and grabbed a fistful, sinking her arm in  up to the wrist.
-- Well, but then their county didn’t have a “Choose Civility” campaign.]

Korean elephant speaks all languages!

As CNN breathlessly and credulously reports:

Korean is considered one of the hardest languages in the world to master, but an elephant in a South Korean zoo is making a good start.
Koshik, a 22-year-old Asian elephant has stunned experts and his keepers at Everland Zoo near Seoul by imitating human speech. Koshik can say the Korean words for "hello," "sit down," "no," "lie down" and "good."

Don’t believe it?  The proof is here!

Puis trois animateurs américains, sensiblement plus bêtes que la bête:

Now, whether the grunts in question are indeed Korean words, we must leave to the Koreans.   But we ourselves can attest, that these same grunts represent the following words in English!
=> “no” “play” “food” “hello” “happy”
while in French they stand for
=>  “non” “joujou” “gnamgham” “salut” “bébé”
and in German
=> “nyet” “Fahrvergnügen” “Schadenfreude” “Weltschmerz” “Zerrissenheit”
(admittedly, Koshik’s German could use some work)
and so on for every language on the planet!

Here he is speaking perfect German (albeit with a Plattdeutsch accent):

Va. probe of dumped voter registration forms broadens
Officials are reportedly probing whether a company tied to top GOP leaders had engaged in voter registration fraud.

More significant are the criminal connections of Romney’s major backer, Sheldon Adelson, who made his billion in the gambling-and-prostitution demimonde of the Chinese enclave of Macau:

He’s a “backer”, but is no dim figure in the background:  He accompanied Romney on the campaign trip to Israel, and will be one of the figures bringing you a new MidEast war if the neocons have anything to say about it.
