“Entre bleus”
Something potentially quite important happened in Paris last
night, which so far as I can tell has not been reported by any
American source (though it appears in a couple of English-language Russian
ones). A sort of “Blue Lives Matter” demonstration, held by saying
they have had it was the increasing tempo of extremely violent (and often
unpunished) attacks against les forces de
l’ordre. The demonstators began at the hospital where one of their number,
badly burned from a Molotov cocktail launched by a mob of djeunes in the banlieue, was hanging ente la vie et la mort. They then circled the Arc de Triomphe
in their squad cars, sirens blaring -- and (thanks to a new counter-terror law
that allows officers to retain their weapons while off-duty) fully armed.
The demo was set up by officers without the backing of
their own (housebroken) union, beginning with this message on social media:

This all might subside or (goaded by increasingly brazen attacks on them in the banlieues) it could develop rapidly, in a way that might catch the bien-pensant press with their pants down, reduced to a headline “French Government Falls in Coup”, which Americans will not have seen coming. The View from History
Apart from brief respites here and there (usually not
extending beyond the boundaries of a city-state), the history of the world is at best tragic -- at
the frequent worst, not rising to that Sophoclean-Shakespearian dignity, since
merely mad.
Americans at present harbor the impression that we live in uniquely
querulous/perilous times. A glance at the record
will disabuse you. Throughout
almost all of our national history, matters have been much worse (save, again,
here and there -- Ben Franklin’s Philadelphia; the Boston/Cambridge/Concord of the Transcendentalists). The reason we nonetheless nurse this
misimpression is that those of us in the Baby Boom (or their
parents, remembering raising them)
grew up in exceptionably untroubled times (be it only on the surface,
which was all we kids perceived) -- and this, not merely in this hamlet or
that, but pretty much across the land.
There was so much hope -- much of it rewarded. True, there were threats then,
graver than even those now, as of an obliterating nuclear war (that might be
triggered, moreover, by misunderstanding or accident). Yet somehow such matters receded beind the horizon of
consciousness, so pleased were we
with all the babies, milkshakes, the G.I. bill, tailfins -- so much that
was suddenly new.
That might sound like Pollyanna’s comfort -- “It might be
worse”. But actually it is the
flipside of that bright twinkling coin, that casts its shadow. For the clear statistical implication
is that our recent state is no more than a blessed bubble, metastable, which a
pinprick might annihilate, and history revert to form.

A remarkable, very readable essay of historical pessimism,
is Lord Raglan’s How Came Civilization (1939). His answer:
It came via discoveries that happened once, and then diffused. Most societies never invent anything, and, left to
their own devices, degenerate, forgetting even the skills they once had, unless
these come to be re-imported. The
candle, once snuffed, does not relight itself.
A much more widely held theory is that nations, like individuals, have
their day. When that is done, and
when they have made every contribution to progress that they are capable of
making, then the mysterious force which controls the universe sweeps them away to make room for younger and more
vigorious races, which will begin again
where the old ones left off …
When, however, we examine this
theory, we find that it will not fit the facts. The builders of Babylon and Borobudur, of Uxmal and
Zimbabwe, and of many another great city of the past, were succeeded, not by
people who could revive and carry forward their civilization, but by the
savage, the jungle, or the desert.

(Here he is speaking of ancient Zimbabwe; but indeed, in the post-Colonial nation
of the same name, the devolution is repeating itself.)
The exhausted cultural autocides of Europe, resigned before
the prospect of le grand remplacement, or even welcoming its hordes with
teddy-bears, may hope, consciously
or not, for such renewal -- but alas:
There is nothing in the history of
Europe, or any other part of the world, to support the view that an occasional
barbarian invasion supplies
civilization with a necessary tonic, a view which would involve our keeping
enough barbarians in being to sack
London and Paris every few centuries, whenever it might be considered that we
had reached the appropriate degree of senility.

What is remarkable is that this news was initially suppressed -- only
today has the media dam crumbled.
Cowed by political correctness, the police did nothing -- so
far, not a single arrest.

Contemporaneous with that, was the baffling phenomenon of “premature”
French defeatism in the face of a resurgent Germany, an enigma of mass
psychology.
After all, they had won
the last war against Germany
(albeit with a late assist from the Yanks); moreover, throughout the ‘twenties and even into the ‘thirties,
France had considerably superior military means, which they constantly
undervalued (as William Shirer consistently emphasizes -- and marvels at -- in
his magisterial The Collapse of the Third Republic (1969)).
True, there were a few active
partisans of Germany in France, even after the rise of Hitler; yet France’s abject capitulation -- by
degrees, over years -- was not the result of any conspiratorial Fifth
Column. The whole nation took psychological shelter in what we may
term the “Maginot fantasy”. Not
as that lesson of military history is commonly misread (for which see here). Rather, at the same time the country told itself that it was safe behind its cosy
walls -- it yet refused to complete the fortificaions. It is as though your house had three
walls and a stout oak front-door with many locks, but nothing behind. The French might call it a psychose; we shall be content with “cognitive-dissonance” (anglicè, “doublethink”).
The elites followed suit:
There are always people willing to
throw good money after bad, and the situation became that Germany was in reality expanding its armament industry by new borrowings.
The potential enemies of Germany in the next war -- France, the small
succession states, Great Britain, and even Soviet Russia -- were financing the
effort that Germany may make some day to destroy them. The process reached its most extreme
phase when, in December, 1934, the Bank of England granted a $3,750,000 credit
to Germany in order “to facilitate the mobilization of German commercial
credits”, i.e., so that Germany might have means to meet old debts -- and build
airplanes that can cross the English Channel in seven minutes.

Notice that that was published in 1938 -- thus, without benefit of hindsight. (Gunther’s whole book is both prescient
and brilliant.)

For over four years now, I have been following (and blogging about) the increasing Überfremdung and Völkeraustausch that threatens Europe. And marveled at the relative lack (until quite
recently) of coverage (other than edulcorated coverage) in the European
MSM. Nor is it simply a
matter of out-of-touch elites or a media conspiracy of silence: for all those governments, from Sweden
to France and Germany, who have been fomenting the inflow, and turning a blind
eye to the spread of no-go zones, were popularly elected. When Italy used its coast guard, not to guard its coast, but

Teddybärschenker at the Bahnhofs, literally applauding the intruders like some
victorious invading army, or perhaps the Beatles.
What are we to make of all this?
I still don’t understand it. But increasingly (in the Readers’-Comments columns) we
see similar expressions of bafflement by Germans themselves. “I feel as though I have strayed into
the wrong film,” one wrote. “Is
this really happening?”

to nationhood as the fractional minorities have to autonomy -- to put it
mildly. You cannot follow the
practice of self-determination to its logical extreme without reaching an absurdity -- that the state itself is

erhalten die Mittwochskundgebungen der AfD immer mehr Zulauf. Der Ton ist
scharf: Kanzlerin Merkel solle sich
wegen ihrer Asylpolitik „ein anderes
Volk suchen“, sagte ein prominenter AfD-Politiker.

North Pole prepares for massive influx
As the masses of undocumented (or counterfeit-documented)
immigrants continue to roll over
Europe, the strategy has been consistent:
we might dub it Delayed Dominoes. In each case, the impacted state follows the following
playbook:
(1) First, make a show of putting
up some resistence, defending your borders.
(2) Wheel around 180 degrees, let everyone in with no delay or
identity-check, whoosh them onto free trains or buses heading north. End of problem.
This strategy has been followed, to their own satisfaction,
successively by Greece, Macedonia, Croatia, Hungary, and Austria. Each waves the hordes onwards, till
they pile up in Germany.

This morning brought some long-overdue news: Bavaria, whose Munich Bahnhof was the
central distribution point for teddy-bears by much-photographed smiling,
even ecstatic Milchmädchens, is
slowly waking up to what it hath wrought.
Voices of concern have arisen even from the SPD, which normally inhabits
an alternate universe; but city mayors do not have that luxury, they see
the crisis up close and personal ("hautnah miterlebt" is the German phrase for this). And so Seehofer
(CSU) has announced …. (drum-roll) … a state of
NOTWEHR
(Emergency Defense.)
So! He’s going
to actually close Bavaria’s foreign borders, is he? (Bit of a reach, that, a Bundesland having its own foreign
policy; but since the Federal
state itself has none apart from sheer surrender -- as Caesar used to say,
Extremis malis extrema remedia.)
Well, no; he
hasn’t actually got the backbone for that. Instead, he is following strategy (2): Let everyone in, but don’t let them
stay, just shoot them all north and let other people deal with it.

Future development are predictable (as has been the
storyline so far, given that no-one in Europe has a pair of balls). Already we have seen refugees
leaving generous but overcrowded German, of their own accord, plowing into
Denmark and being waved on north, to Sweden. Sweden, however, is already swamped; remarkably, some immigrants have
already fled the resulting mess and have been forcing their way into Finland: where, however, the citizenry (not the government) has
been making a show of resistence.
For that, they get condemned by all the Gutmenschen of the world. Clearly, there is just one
solution: Provide free transportation for everyone,
yet onwards … to Ultima Thule … to the North
Pole.
Which, by the way, is extremely underpopulated.

So far, the Polar Bears are taking this surprisingly well.
“We don’t anticipate any hitches,” said spokesbear Peter
Polar in an interview with an admiring BBC. “We’re a simple folk, living on fish. We don’t eat pork, we don’t drink wine,
we don’t listen to music, and our females don’t wear make-up or miniskirts --
all the things that would get you whipped or beheaded in a Salafist state. We should be able to live peacefully
forever, side by side.”
“But -- “ interjected a newsman from Realityland, “your females go completely naked.”

Deutschland schafft sich ab
Circa twenty years ago, after the Berlin Wall had fallen,
and the two halves of Germany were being painfully reassembled, the New
Jersey-based company Franklin Electronic Publishers, where I worked as
Editor-in-Chief, hosted two executives in lexicography from the venerable
Langenscheidt company. I
picked them up at their hotel near my home in Princeton, and drove them to our
headquarters in Mount Holly.
On the way, I asked them about the affect of Reunification on the German
language.
To my surprise, they were not especially interested in the
question. More surprising
was the reason : in their
estimation, the German language, far from being strengthened by the new
political accession of fellow-speakers, would recede more and more from use,
and eventually go the way of Danish.
And to my astonishment
(particularly coming from German bilingual-lexicographers, for whom their
language, and the desires of foreigners to learn it, is meat and drink), this
prospect left them curiously indifferent.
By most of the Gutmenschen
of today’s Europe, such acedia (misconstrued as sang-froid) in the face of the
expected inevitable, would be reckoned admirable. But I found it strangely troubling.
Nota bene: The
unreferenced expected inheritor of the German-language mantle was English. Little did they imagine that, in some now-conceivable
scenarios, it could one day be Arabic.

With comparable astonishment, the world now beholds
Germany’s self-dilution, quite possibly leading to self-dissolution.
Apart from the dissolution of the Soviet Union, this might
be the beginnings of the most significant geopolitical (voire, demographic -- which ultimately trumps all else) development
in our lifetimes.
To all this, I shall have no comment.
In part, because it’s not principally my battle (though I
care about this deeply).
In part, because hardly anyone reads this blog anyway (nor
is politics really its brief; vielmehr, Theologia Mathematika).
But principally, because there is already abundant
intelligent and impassioned commentary from Germans, and from all who care
about Germany -- nay, Deutschtum überhaupt. -- Not,
however, in the pages of the MainStream Media, which has long been gurgling
with Gutmenschenschwärmerei. Rather, in the lengthy and well-reasoned readers’ comments,
on sites like Telepolis or Die Zeit (in the latter case, massively contrary to
the bisounours editorial line.) [Later, I hope to append a selection of
these.

Die Deutsche Sprache schafft sich
ab
Using my wife’s tablet, I attempted to bring up
DeutscheWelle. It brought up only
the English-language site. I
specifically added “.de”; stubbornly, it changed that to “.com” and
re-presented the English site. So
I went to the German Wikipedia and clicked on the link labeled “Offizielle
Webpräsenz”: it too brought me to the English site!
Well, maybe that’s just the tablet. It has recently introduced a
dumbed-down version of news.google.[…];
I was able to revert to the original presentation on the English
version, with a few clicks, but
these didn’t work for the French and German.
So I tried it on the MacIntosh: same deal.
Ultimately I found the real site by having bookmarked an
article, back when you could still get to it easily, and from this clicked
through to: http://www.dw.com/de/themen/s-9077. [That is just today’s;
I never was able to pull up a permanent German homepage.]

In Deutschland herrscht “helpers’ high” (a.k.a. “Sommermärchen”, “Glückswelle”, & “Willkommenshysterie”).
It is a strange
phenomenon. At the Bahnhofs,
ecstatic welcome is extended to Germany’s future (and partly present)
gravediggers. This
euphoria is hailed in all of Germany’s mainstream media, and nay-sayers are
smacked with the “Nazikeule”.

The madness of crowds. So was ist in Mitteleuropa schon passiert, zur

Seit 2006 hat der Verfassungsschutz Sami A. im Visier. Er
soll enger Vertrauter von Osama Bin Laden gewesen sein und zu seiner Leibgarde
gehört haben. Die Stadt Bochum wollte ihn bereits mehrfach in sein Heimatland
zurückschicken. Am Mittwoch (15.06.2016) hat das Verwaltungsgericht
Gelsenkirchen entschieden, dass er nicht abgeschoben werden darf.
