  1. This was a great movie - you summarized it nicely. So my take at the ending: At the site of the approaching storm the wife came to the realization that her husband's paranoia, as destructive as it was to their day-to-day lives, wasn't exactly irrational. After all - storms exist, and have wiped out entire cities catching the residents completely by surprise. The movie leaves us wondering what the implications are when we realize that the the monster under the bed is a real thing and not just a figment of a crazy person's imagination. Sure, it might not come out and get us, but then again...it might.

  2. In thinking about it - maybe that interpretation is too literal still. I didn't notice that nobody else on the beach noticed the approaching storm, but thought there was quite literally a huge storm in the distance, and that the raining oil was from oil rigs being torn apart at sea or something.

  3. Indeed, a naturalistic explanation will not ultimately cut it. After all, the oil fell earlier, inland, as well.

    1. But when it fell earlier in the movie it was revealed to be a dream, which he interpreted as a premonition. When it fell at the end of the film, we were led to believe it was real. But I'm with you I think, it makes a lot more sense that the storm is entirely imaginary - a metaphor for mental illness. But then why not choose a metaphor that isn't a real thing that someone can be rationally afraid of?
