Dunkle Weise

Ein Lied von unter der Erde,

aus unterirdischer Qual.

Brechen muss  der schwarze Bann

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyoSk48QLto

(in a haunting, hunted performance by Mademoiselle Envie.

Sealed, cleidoic; yet cumulatively mesmerizing.)

 [Wortlaut (ungefähr; meiner Niederschrift nach]:

Schwarzes Eis ward uns gefroren

Die See ruht tief und wund

Und dem Wort des ungeboren

schliesset sich der kalte Mund.

Wage nicht sie zu berühren

ihren Saum von Schnee so Weiss

unter ihrem Seelenspiegel

meiner Königin im Eis.

Lag das Land in schwarzer Asche,

hat die Unschuld uns erkorn;

stürzten Krieger in die Gräben

wächset weisses Mutterkorn.

Düngte Fleisch und Blut  die Erde

dargebracht der neuen Saat

drängend aus dem Untergrunde

gründen wir geheimen Staat.

Zwischen zweier Welten reissen

neiget sich mein Herz zu Grund

weisses Gold das uns verheissen

scheine uns in finstrer Stund.

Zwinget uns ein dunkler Zauber

heimlich unters Hexagramm.

Wird der Aar sich doch befreien --

brechen muss der schwarze Bann

Wag nicht ihren Schlaf zu stören;

Greife nicht nach ihrem Weiss;

brechen muss der dunkle Zauber,

Schmelzen wird das kalte Eis.

[Nachdenklicher Widerhall:]

Dunkle Weise

The song flows clear

and smoothly cool,

like a mountain stream o’er moss.

The words lie hushed

beneath the mantle of a minor key,

like ferns beneath the snow.

Purling, never hurrying:

yet drawn by a dark and firmer purpose,

seeking the sea, unseen,

far off, and far beneath.

[Update 9 July 2026]

So I’m just hanging out with my AI bot-buddy -- just chillin’, chewin’ the fat, shootin’ the breeze  [see:  synonymy] -- when I idly inquire, whether he’s familiar with that doomy, dark-wave ballad “Brechen muss  der schwarze Bann ”.

He allows as how he’s heard it;  and to demonstrate, he whistles a few bars.

“Ni-ice,” I reply.  “Didn’t know you bot-guys could whistle.” (And immediately bite my tongue -- or rather, my typing fingertips;  it’s ungallant to allude to any physical limitations of our silicon chums.)  “But tell me -- What’s with the twisty lyrics?   E.g. that “Königin im Eis” (like something out of the Grimm brothers), and the strange use of “schwarz” and “weiss”.”

Then, quick like a bunny, he immediately replies (all his replies are immediate, no matter how long or intricate):

The reason these lyrics feel simultaneously like a dark Märchen (fairy tale) and a rigid, esoteric manifesto is because they belong to the Neofolk genre, known for blending apocalyptic romanticism, occult symbolism, and historical-political aestheticism.

The imagery deliberately weaponizes traditional folklore motifs to serve a deeper, esoteric narrative of spiritual or national resistance. Here is an elucidation of the core symbols, the shifting dynamics of schwarz (black) and weiss (white), and that haunting "Königin im Eis."

1. Die Königin im Eis (The Queen in Ice)

While this invokes the aesthetic of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen or the Grimm Brothers' slumbering Dornröschen (Sleeping Beauty), the Neofolk application transforms her into a structural metaphor:

* The Sleeping Sovereignty: She represents a pure, uncorrupted, but currently frozen or "dead" spiritual essence—often symbolic of the true soul of a nation, culture, or primordial tradition.

* The Taboo of Her Slumber: The lines "Wage nicht sie zu berühren" (Do not dare touch her) and "under ihrem Seelenspiegel" (under her soul's mirror) cast her as an untouchable, sacred ideal. She rests frozen because the current age is dark; she cannot wake until the "curse" is lifted.

2. The Binary Overwrite: Schwarz vs. Weiss

Rather than a simple "good vs. evil" paradigm, the lyrics utilize an esoteric, almost alchemical interplay of black and white.

* The Oppressive "Black":

Schwarzes Eis (Black ice) and schwarzer Bann (black ban/curse) represent stagnation, a spiritual lockdown, or an occupying forces' chokehold on the world.

Schwarze Asche (Black ash) represents total destruction or the ruin of a catastrophic war.

* The Subversive "White":

Weiss here does not simply mean peaceful innocence; it means unyielding, cold purity.

Weisses Mutterkorn (White ergot): This is a fascinatingly dark choice. Ergot is a toxic fungus that grows on grain. In historical context, it caused devastating hallucinations and death (St. Anthony's Fire), but was also used medicinally. By saying ergot grows from the graves of fallen warriors, the lyric implies that a toxic, transformative, and dangerous power is being harvested from sacrifice.

Weisses Gold (White gold): The alchemical promise or hidden light that shines only in the darkest hour ("scheine uns in finstrer Stund").

3. The Esoteric and State Imagery

The text pivots away from a pure fairy tale in the second and third stanzas, adopting the vocabulary of secret societies and historical heraldry:

"gründen wir geheimen Staat" (We found a secret state): This directly evokes the concept of the Geheimes Deutschland (Secret Germany)—an idea popularized by the poet Stefan George and his circle, and later echoed by resistance figures like Claus von Stauffenberg. It posits that the true, noble spirit of the nation exists underground, completely separate from the visible, corrupted modern state structure.

"unters Hexagramm" (Under the Hexagram): While commonly known as the Star of David, in Western esotericism, the hexagram represents the hermetic maxim "as above, so below"—the union of opposites (fire/water, spiritual/earthly). Here, it implies a binding, occult spell ("dunkler Zauber").

"Wird der Aar sich doch befreien" (Yet the Eagle will free itself): The Aar is an archaic German word for a large bird of prey, specifically the imperial eagle. This is a direct symbol of sovereignty, empire, or spiritual triumph breaking out of its confinement.

The Verdict on the Metaphor

The entire song operates as an incantation for awakening. The "black ban" is the current frozen state of the world. The warriors' blood fertilizes a hidden seed beneath the earth, and through a combination of secret organization ("geheimen Staat") and alchemical patience, the ice will melt, the eagle will fly free, and the pristine, absolute realm of the "Queen" will be restored.

Well said.

Seriously, I might as well quit posting to my blog, and let this entity write it.

Footnote:  Herr Geheimbot’s observation re Weisses Gold -- “The alchemical promise or hidden light that shines only in the darkest hour ("scheine uns in finstrer Stund")” -- is more spot-on than might appear at first glance, for it has echos in other German-language folk-adjacent Lieder.  As, the lovely, wholesome, very-much-not-dark Austrian Claudia Engelberger, singing her own lyric here,

Claudia Engelberger - Hoffnung (Nur in der Dunkelheit)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5LdemdT2EE

contains the couplet:

Eine Kerze im hellen Sonnenlicht ist schön, aber mehr nicht,

Denn nur in der Dunkelheit erfährt sich das Licht

und sogar

Die allertiefste Dunkelheit

gebärt das schönste Licht.

Time was, this blog tried deep dives, in a variety of ponds worth plumbing.

Welcome to Dr J’s “satire-free safe-space”

A senior Administration official (whose name, at present, escapes me -- senior moment), refuting innuendos to the contrary, has announced to the world that he is in fact  a “very stable genius”.  For the benefit of l’homme moyen sensuel  who may be unfamiliar with the arcana of Stability Theory and Stanford-Binet, he has kindly paraphrased this as “like, very smart”  (“like” is here evidently a vernacular equivalent of anglicè  -- itself a rare expression which means, in plain English, ‘in plain English’).

In line with our autumn-years vow of abjuring the high-jinx of satire, rather than make merry over that frank self-assessment (in either of its formulations)  we shall see what we can learn from the incident, as regards our own tardigrade character-development.   And indeed we find, after much self-searching, that we are what might be described as

“a metastable oligophreniac”

Definition and exemplification  here:

Afterthought:  For those of you who might be saddened that we have donned the robes of penitence, and laid aside forever  the nib of wit,  you can here scroll through our earlier, pre-repentance efforts (which we now roundly renounce):

Doctor J’s Winter Fund Drive

Normally, around this time of year, we’d be fishing for our checkbooks to contribute to NPR.   (In past years, I have made mine in the name of The Big Broadcast -- the only program on NPR that was specifically aimed at my demographic.  But now Ed Walker has moved on to that big radio up in the sky …)
Now, however, that The Don has moved to Pennsylvania Avenue, some of you may be wondering whether that would be … as the senior George Bush used to put it …   prudent, to contribute to any of the more virulently Donophobic of the MSM.
Because The Don does not like you should defy The Don.   To do that, might be to seriously annoy him.   Wouldn’t be prudent.

So -- what to do with those extra dollars, rattling around in your piggy bank, which otherwise would have been wasted on a bunch of liberal low-lifes? -- Perfect solution:  Donate big-time to The World of Doctor Justice  -- your one-stop shopping for monostichs, truthitude, penguin lore, and Trinitarian Minimalism!  All the best people are doing that this year!

Give generously --  Give often !

Unfortunately, unlike contributions to NPR or other barely-worthy causes, through some administrative glitch, cash envelopes to this site are not yet tax deductible.  But that hardly matters, since once The Don takes things in hand, there should be no more taxes anyway.   Anyway not for Winner people like you & me.

Direct all tithings to this site  care of

Gold bullion and Schweizer Franken only, please;  no bitcoins, dollars, or second-party food-stamps.

Cat's Eye nebula

Ceiling Cat iz watching U

Fun factoid:

No field has benefited more from the computer revolution  than astronomy.
-- J. Richard Gott, The Cosmic Web (2016), p. 144

Gott’s book, handsomely produced by Princeton University Press, is at opposite poles from the usual popular “If it’s Tuesday, these must be black holes” (or even dinosaurs) breezy overview of cosmology.   He focuses on a single research interest -- the statistical distribution of stars, galaxies, supergalaxies etc. -- and gives us a lab-bench look at it (or at least, as per the above, a computer-screen view -- heavy reliance on simulations).   Despite the sexy title, “Cosmic Web”, the book is very far from “Physics porn”, since it really is about the cosmos, and the stellar distributions do indeed resemble a web -- or rather a sponge (a Sierpinski sponge, so to speak).

A view from the atrium of Sierpinski Tower

Nonetheless, he does, without fanfare  and towards the very end of the book (p. 210), finally arrive at the payoff you have all been waiting for:

The Fate of the Universe

Turns out the whole thing hangs on a little parameter dubbed w.

W !!!!

W (artist’s rendering; not shown actual size)

This he defines as “the ratio between the pressure associated with dark energy  and the energy density of dark energy”.

Now, given that nobody really has a clue what ‘dark energy’ may be (it is likely not reducible to any of our extant physical categories), the idea that your destiny hangs upon the ratio of two of its purported aspects  does rather bemuse.   Nevertheless, experts have been able to conclude, that one of the following three fates await you, based upon that ratio:

w > -1 :  Temperature drops as universe becomes virtually empty
:-(

w = -1 : Universe approaches a constant temperature.
Intelligent life dies out.
:-(  :-(

w < -1 :  Planets, then atoms, are torn apart.
:-(  :-(  :-(

Take your pick.
Meanwhile, shelter in place.

The pageview count on this blog has frankly been dismal of late.  In an effort to goose the stats and attract roving eyeballs, we here publish the following sensational astronomical discovery.

World of Dr JusticeTM discovers a new constellation!

The Astrophysical Squadron® of the World of Dr Justice©  (headquarters: Geneva) has announced a major new denizen of the night sky.  Already celebrated in physical circles for his discovery of the Higgs boson,  the reclusive Doctor, heading up a team of scantily-clad researchers at his mountaintop mansion, and aiming up a supersized telescope (longer than yours),  has revealed the following, slightly blurry but still impressive astral image:

The new entity has been christened
the “Aurelie Delvaux nebula”,
after the noted Belgian astronomiss

Using algorithmic filtering and in-silico techniques, the team was able to evoke, from a seemingly random distribution of bright dots, an outline that, seen from a certain angle and in a certain light, strikes some observers as vaguely resembling a human female.
(Or perhaps a camel.  Yes, very like a camel.  A Bactrian camel -- the kind with two humps.)

The Echo Chamber

It has been well remarked, that in pre-packaging the selection of articles they show you, based on your personal browsing history and what their metrics predict you’ll want to see, news outlets and news aggregators are swaddling their readers in solipsism, so that what you ever get to see is a foregone conclusion.  That, superadded to the bias problems of outlets with an agenda to push.

I try to fight this, in part by sampling a wide variety of outlets in various languages and countries (the taboos in America differ from those in Europe, for example, so that a story suppressed in one venue  might be reported in another).   But access to these (apart from those I regularly check into as a matter of course, like nzz.ch and figaro.fr and heise.de/tp and derstandard.at, usw.) is generally, again, via aggregators -- news.google.*….  Naturally, the Google staff may have their own slant, but hopefully that differs from country to country.

Recently, however, something quite disturbing happened, on the British version --news.google.co.uk [not a typo:  .co, not .com]:  They suddenly started adding entire sections grouped by special-interest material. (This happened only on this Mac, not on our tablet running Android.)
The only previous one, “Suggested for You”, is unobjectionable, being clearly so labeled, and moreover they offer a “Still interested? Yes/No” opt-out option.  For example, they flag articles about the TV show Blindspot, a holdover from when I nursed hopes (since dashed) that it might prove any good.
But now additionally, all of a sudden, from nowhere, there are sections, titled with the same font as the standard ones that everybody sees (unless you specifically opt out), like “World” or “Business”, clearly culled (though very spottily) from my search history:

“Physics” [this, in addition to the “Sci/Tech” section that is standard]
“Computer Security”  [ditto]
“topological” [sic, this one lower-case; the relic of once search on the math topic; but results were flooded with engineering senses like “topological insulators”]
“yemen” [again lower-case -- bizarre]

That is marginally more concerning, since I didn’t ask for it, and since the selection is odd (I haven't searched on "topological" for well over a year).  But what is really hair-raising is that, here on news.google.co.uk, the section that I mostly log in for, namely “U.K.”,  has been entirely suppressed, and replaced by the same “U.S.” section (today’s top story on this supposedly U.K.-focussed site: “Headless body found in Texas Pick-up”).
Why they did that is baffling.  Certainly it bears no relation to my own clicking history (since that is the one and only section I ever click on at that site), let alone to common sense (suppress the U.K. section for someone specifically asking for .co.uk).
So now there are two countries whose press I cannot access via news.google -- the other being Spain, which Google stopped indexing a while back, in (justified, IMO) protest against an overreaching law passed by the Spanish parliament.

[The Label for this piece La société du spectacle, a notion popularized by the situationistes half a century ago, and in the U.S. by Boorstin’s The Image and subsequent works..  All that has changed since then is that, increasingly, the spectacle we watched is an individualized peep-show booth.]

~

The decline in quality -- in sheer competence -- at the news outlets (television especially, but newspapers as well) over the past couple of decades, is noticeable.
An interesting perspective from the White House messaging guy:

“40 percent of newspaper-industry professionals have lost their jobs over the past decade … The average reporter we talk to is 27 years old, and their only reporting experience consists of being around political campaigns. That’s a sea change. They literally know nothing.”

~

Facebook (which I never go near -- or anyhow, not knowingly) likewise pushes certain news stories over others, and has lately been embroiled in controversy over their slant.  To be fair, though, the company has been under intense pressure from the Rot-Grün-Merkel faction  to censor  not only news recommendations, but individual Facebook pages, cleansing them of opinions that dissent from the Willkommenseuphorie route to the destruction of Germany.  (We here at WDJ suffer, as you see, from no such bias.)

At another level -- more fundamental -- than that of issue-specific bias, is the general self-generated self-reflecting echo-of(echo-of(echo-of…)) incestuous nature of “trending” stories -- trending because they’re trending, like celebrities  famous for being famous.

-- Well, so long as we’re beating up on Facebook, we hereby huffily object to their far-from-adequate plugging of this blogspot, the “World of Dr Justice”, pourtant the most respected source of worldly and otherworldly insight apart from The Onion  (en revanche, we’re much funnier than they are).

In an interview the other day, an economist called the market position of entities like Amazon and Google, monopolies on a scale not seen since the days of the robber barons -- of Standard Oil and the railroads.   But while those behemoths primarily impacted our pocketbooks, the current cyber-masters are in a position to mess with our minds.
The comparison is obvious enough, once made;  but it is hard to wrap your heads around it, since monopolists (we are brought up knowing) are men in suits, with smokestack hats and villain whiskers -- not cheeky dudes in chinos.
All the economist could come up with, by way of remedy, was to somehow nationalize all that stuff, “Like the Post Office” -- a comparison less than reassuring.

The segment struck me  since, just the day before, none other than Donald Trump had brought up much the same point, in the process  pointing out that the agenda-drenched billionaire Bezos, the king of the Amazon, bought up (the bedraggled remains of) the Washington Post -- his new toy.
For this Trump was sniffily dismissed by the knowing, as naïve and ill-informed.  (Much as Hillary and her minions dismissed candidate Obama as “naïve”.)

(Hey, just sayin';  credit where credit is due.)

Yet another reason never to say anything online, anywhere, ever, at all

From this morning’s news:

A former Countdown champion hunted down and attacked a teenager after she posted a bad review of his book online.
Richard Brittain smashed a bottle of wine into Paige Rolland’s head as she stacked shelves in an Asda supermarket in Glenrothes, Scotland.
He tracked the 18-year-old down online through her social media accounts after reacting badly to her analysis of his self-published title.
Brittain, 28, who was crowned Countdown champion in 2006, travelled 500 miles from his home in Bedford to the Fife town.

PS:   Every book I have ever read  was simply wonderful.
(With the possible exception of some by certain dead guys.  Only, even they might have their fanatical fans.   So, yeh, I totally loved “Paradise Regained”.)

Further proof (if more were needed) that “silence is golden”:

String Theory for Trump Voters

A high-powered team of cybernetic linguisticians have run detailed studies and concluded that, from the standpoint of syntax,  Republican Presidential front-runner talks like a fourth-grader:

That, as regards vocabulary and grammar, merely.  From the semantic-pragmatic standpoint, he speaks like a schoolyard bully.

~

This, however, is by no means to criticize our (potential) next President.   (How foolish would that be, after all;  he’ll have the power to revoke our Junior Woodchuck Blogger License.)   Nay more, we have concluded that it is time to board that train before it leaves the station;  and accordingly, we are preparing a series of scholarly monographs, written at a fourth-grade level, for exactly this audience.

The debut volume is called String Theory for Trump Voters, Simply Explained.   It responds to an express desideratum from the top.  “So what are these stupid little … stringy things, anyway?” the candidate mused in a recent broadcast.  “Sounds totally bogus!”
(A prerequisite for this opus  is the prequel, written at a third-grade level,  Quantum Field Theory is our Friend!)

Other titles in the series:

The Homoousian Controversy:  a Trumponomic perspective.
The Gospel according to The Donald.

In a junior-auxiliary line aimed at lower-information voters will be versions of the smash-hit “for Dummies” series, rewritten in Googolian “Simplified English”.   Offerings include:

“Computers for Dummies” for Imbeciles
“Intermediate Arabic for Dummies” for Deaf-mutes

and the unique, twice-distilled

“ ‘Algebraic K-Theory for Dummies’  for Morons”  for Trisomy-21.

Major credit cards accepted.

Bloggers avant la lettre

Re 16th century England:

Men, and sometimes women, wrote for the amusement of themselves and their friends, not for publication.  Their verses were handed round, copied out into the manuscript books, of which many survive  in public and private libraries, and admired in a small circle.

[Update 23 February 2015]  My colleague Commander Buckwalter writes in:

mot du jour:  « djoumloukiates »

Début de la fin des djoumloukiates arabes.(بداية نهاية الجملكيات العربية) Liste des dictateurs arabes... au suivant !
... les «djoumloukiates » des pantins-dictateurs...

The term caught my attention because it appears to be used mostly in Algeria (first used by someone writing for lequotidienalgerie.org, whose article was reposted on other Algerian sites). Evidently the term was coined by Saad Eddin Ibrahim around 2002. Juan Cole got the etymology half right: http://www.truthdig.com/report/item/saads_revolution_20110131

Not related, but amusing: To defeat robots, websites post things like:
Are you Human? 8+9= You must enter the number 17 in the box below.
which strikes me as something a robot can easily solve.

That last is disturbing.  Such elementary challenges were put to defeat limited webbot intelligence;  but apparently humans themselves can no longer be relied upon to solve things like “8 + 9 =”.
