Cat's Eye nebula

Ceiling Cat iz watching U

Fun factoid:

No field has benefited more from the computer revolution  than astronomy.
-- J. Richard Gott, The Cosmic Web (2016), p. 144

Gott’s book, handsomely produced by Princeton University Press, is at opposite poles from the usual popular “If it’s Tuesday, these must be black holes” (or even dinosaurs) breezy overview of cosmology.   He focuses on a single research interest -- the statistical distribution of stars, galaxies, supergalaxies etc. -- and gives us a lab-bench look at it (or at least, as per the above, a computer-screen view -- heavy reliance on simulations).   Despite the sexy title, “Cosmic Web”, the book is very far from “Physics porn”, since it really is about the cosmos, and the stellar distributions do indeed resemble a web -- or rather a sponge (a Sierpinski sponge, so to speak).

A view from the atrium of Sierpinski Tower

Nonetheless, he does, without fanfare  and towards the very end of the book (p. 210), finally arrive at the payoff you have all been waiting for:

The Fate of the Universe

Turns out the whole thing hangs on a little parameter dubbed w.

W !!!!

W (artist’s rendering; not shown actual size)

This he defines as “the ratio between the pressure associated with dark energy  and the energy density of dark energy”.

Now, given that nobody really has a clue what ‘dark energy’ may be (it is likely not reducible to any of our extant physical categories), the idea that your destiny hangs upon the ratio of two of its purported aspects  does rather bemuse.   Nevertheless, experts have been able to conclude, that one of the following three fates await you, based upon that ratio:

w > -1 :  Temperature drops as universe becomes virtually empty
:-(

w = -1 : Universe approaches a constant temperature.
Intelligent life dies out.
:-(  :-(

w < -1 :  Planets, then atoms, are torn apart.
:-(  :-(  :-(

Take your pick.
Meanwhile, shelter in place.

The pageview count on this blog has frankly been dismal of late.  In an effort to goose the stats and attract roving eyeballs, we here publish the following sensational astronomical discovery.

World of Dr JusticeTM discovers a new constellation!

The Astrophysical Squadron® of the World of Dr Justice©  (headquarters: Geneva) has announced a major new denizen of the night sky.  Already celebrated in physical circles for his discovery of the Higgs boson,  the reclusive Doctor, heading up a team of scantily-clad researchers at his mountaintop mansion, and aiming up a supersized telescope (longer than yours),  has revealed the following, slightly blurry but still impressive astral image:

The new entity has been christened
the “Aurelie Delvaux nebula”,
after the noted Belgian astronomiss

Using algorithmic filtering and in-silico techniques, the team was able to evoke, from a seemingly random distribution of bright dots, an outline that, seen from a certain angle and in a certain light, strikes some observers as vaguely resembling a human female.
(Or perhaps a camel.  Yes, very like a camel.  A Bactrian camel -- the kind with two humps.)

Taylor Swift’s mortgage-based ebolacidal sexxxsational tweet about Ontology !!!

It is a welcome built-in feature of Blogspot, that they report (partially, and to some extent) which posts people are viewing, and where they log in from.  As, a few minutes ago, an internaut from Turkey was contemplating this piece:

            Ontology Porn

It is sort of thrilling to have readers as far away (both geographically and politically) as Turkey, especially one interested in Ontology.  Only …  In this case, although Blogstats itself did not provide the searchstring he used, it was possible to work it out  through other means;  and we are pained to report that it was:

            dr. porn blogspot

That is not the sort of Websurfer we want, nor the reputation we wish to have.

Anyhow -- Ontology is an interesting subject;  we invite you to survey the totality of our essays on the subject, here:

“Justice one liners”

Surprisingly, someone just reached this site by googling those words.   Without further guidance, they might be disappointed.  If it is one-liners that interest you, these indeed exist -- in abundance -- in three different categories, each with a specific Label.  Click on the one that interests you.

=> Epigrams   (These tend to be rather abstract or ‘Zen’.)
=> Choice one-line excerpts from larger posts. (These are rhetorical or polemical, and offer links to the containing essays.)
=> Monostichs.  (Unfortunately these are not Labeled  as such; you would find them via a Boolean intersection of poetry and minimalism, but Blogspot doesn’t let you do that.)

[Note:  Our good friend Mr. Michael Murphy, Private Detective, also gets off an occasional one-liner:

Doctor Justice Strikes it Rich !!!

In an immediate and stinging response to Yahoo’s ham-handed acquisition of Tumblr for $1.1 billion, a corporate giant which for now must remain nameless  but which rhymes with “Schmoogle”  has bid a reported $1.2 trillion for The World of Dr Justice.  Predictably, riots have broken out in the streets.

In the words of a spokesperson for the corporation whose name also rhymes with “Bloogle”:

In clumsily acquiring Tumblr, Yahoo has purchased nothing but 100 million “eyeballs”.   Who wants eyeballs?  Yuk -- disgusting.
What is needed is synapses -- sleek, intelligent nets of neurons.  And this is what you’ll find at WDJ.    From Trinitarian Minimalism  to Cantorian Realism,  from penguins to hamsters, the World of Dr Justice  is the cream of the (as the French put it) crème.

Details of the pact have yet to be worked out, but the basic outlines of the deal seem certain.  (At least, assuming that the offer someone left on my answering-machine wasn’t just some prank or hoax.)

[Flash update -- 22 May 2013]   The corporation not-quite-known-as “Fnoogle” has unexpectedly withdrawn from the bidding  as its offer was suddenly trumped by that of a shadowy entity known only by the covername “Urysohn”.  Details when these become available.

-- Robert Musil, Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften (vol. I: 1930)

“I am writing for only five people at present.”
-- Sigmund Freud, 1914, quoted in Ernest Jones, Freud: Years of Maturity (1955), p. 177

In the two years that this blog has been in existence, the statistics have indicated a steady increase in audience.   These were important, both for general morale, and for indicated which essays evoked the most interest, thus pointing the way towards further development.
It now appears that the bulk of the reported pageviews  are bogus -- nuisance-bots.  I have been speaking to a mostly empty auditorium.

If I do occasionally post in the months to come, it will largely be simply to organize my thoughts (the hyperlink and Label features being quite useful in that regard), as well as for the benefit of any reader who might happen to stroll by.  But there is little point laboring to feed a hunger that isn’t there.

If, by chance, you do happen to feel peckish, there is a wealth of fare to sample.  One way in is via these topical indices:
http://worldofdrjustice.blogspot.com/search/label/index

Or check out some of my books:
http://www.linguasacrapublishing.com/justice.html

There is also our sister site,
http://murphybros.blogspot.com/
which is being newly updated in response to a recent surge in sales of these vernacular-but-philosophical detective stories.

Valete, quirites.

[Update] According to the Blogger stats, WDJ has just passed the milestone of Fifty Thousand alltime pageviews.
Picture yourself giving a series of Chatauqua-style lectures, with a cumulative audience of fifty thousand.  -- Of course, we're talking about an audience  most of whom walk out after a minute and a half on the site.
Only, in any event, according to Google Analytics, the bulk of these hits are bogus to begin with.

New site slogan:

~~ The World of Dr Justice ~~
~~ Serving the ex-Soviet Web-bot community since 2011 ~~

[Update]  Example of a thematic index.  Here, the selected quotation gives a sense of the flavor of the essay from which it is drawn.

O Tempora O Mores

The Duke University English Department has a lot to answer for, having been instrumental in the deconstructionist desecration of academia.  The latest object to plop out of that orifice  is reviewed in this morning’s New York Times

Warning !  The videos linked-to are rated NC-53 !!  No-one under the age of 53 or so should watch them !   And even these, only after making Confession…

In Breughel's Icarus, for instance: how everything turns away
Quite leisurely from the disaster …

Tares planted in the Endarkenment (humorously known as the Enlightenment) have sprouted to weeds that choke the vacant lots where atheists briefly couple and depart -- unacquainted with Temptation, since  now  to desire  is incontinently  to take; and unable to commit adultery, being after all strangers to vows.

[Update 13 I 13]
Upon learning of the high percentage of Web-bot hits in the WDJ Blogger pageview stats, I had resolved to post less frequently to my (it now appears) little-read blog, and to read and think more deeply about lasting things, before penning anything, rather than reacting incontinently to the froth of the day’s headlines.  Yet the post-Modernist mindlessness of this morning’s NYTimes  requires a rejoinder -- the very stones cry out.

So now there is this :

WDJ: *Another* abject retraction

For reasons that utterly escape us, the slight post below now holds the record for the most-viewed item on this site.  More puzzling still, most of the pageviews occurred after Mitt What’s-His-Name became no more than a grease-spot on the buttocks of History.  Surely its ephemeral japery is by now O.B.E.

The suspicion, indeed, arises, that most of the supposed viewers are not real readers, but trolling robots.  To foil their evil schemes, we have removed the post from its original situs, and we re-post it here -- without a live link to this one  that a web-bot could exploit.
We’ll see.

While we’re at it, though, we cannot refrain from noting that the news of Mitt Romney being actually Black -- an exclusive scoop of the World of Dr Justice -- has now been explicitly confirmed by the President himself.   --  What, you don’t believe me?   Then witness this documentary footage, and believe your ears and eyes.

Never doubt me again.

WDJ:  Another abject retraction

It seems to be our sorry lot at this site  to release sensational revelations, the Talk of the Web, only to learn that we misspoke.  (Sad examples  here and here.)   Such is once again alas the case;  and once again the controversy concerns Mr. Mitford “Mitt” Romney, former moderate, former and future corporate raider, and current President-for-Life of People’s Islamic Azawad

This site was the first  outside of compartmented channels  to reveal that Mr. Mitt “Witt” Romney is -- to all appearances -- Black.  But appearances can be deceiving.
In a carefully-worded response to our claim, the Romney campaign would confirm only that the candidate is “of African descent”.   But which -- Maghrebi or Sub-Saharan?  It makes a difference.  The Arabs and Berbers of the Maghreb, howsoever dusky of hue, belong linguistically (and thus, in a loose sense, racially) to the Hamito-Semitic group, rather than to the Negroid (this latter group, or granfalloon, having a certain vague physical coherence, with some notable exceptions, and too much linguistic diversity to fall under any taxonomic rubric -- but we are informally using the traditional sub-scientific term) would not normally be referred to as  “Black”.  So which is it?

*     *     *
~ Commercial break ~
We now return you to your regularly scheduled essay.

*     *     *

I put the question to the candidate himself the other day, down at the yacht club, over drinks (single-malt in my case, Diet Cherry Coke in his).   So which is it, “Mitt”?
Whereupon Romney, speaking through an interpreter in his native Tifinagh, replied:
        “Oogoo-boogoo wagah,  noogoo-loogoo babah.”
(The interpreter wasn’t very good.)

Over at the bar, Romney’s prospective running-mate Donald Trump, speaking out of his anus, added:
“A Trump and Romney ticket is now accepted as inevitable.  But -- which of us will be at the top of the ticket?  That’s where the bookies are making odds.  Visit any of my casinos to grab a piece of the action.”
With that, the magnate winked, and clutched his crotch.

Frustrated, we put the question directly to his campaign staff:   From whence does Mitt “Mitt” Romney hail -- the Maghreb, or the Dark Continent beneath the Sahara?
After a hasty whispered conversation, a staffer replied:

“Whichever will offend the fewest voters.”

Mathsex (updated for the holiday season)

We have previously had occasion to note the useful and informative Blogspot stats, which, by listing the search-phrases that brought surfers to this site, give a glimpse into the minds of our audience.  Recent examples (copied and pasted exactly as originally written -- some of them are rather odd):

www.quotes on truth and beauty combined
two schools of poetry are what
quousque tandem, catilina, abutemini patienzia nostra?

(that last one seems to segue into an Italian aria).

And then (* sigh *)  there are the badboys of the searchstring community.  Recent examples:
porno azawad
big boob bloopers

and, strangest of all,

mathsex

-- or perhaps it was “sexmath”, I don’t recall;  anyhow written solid, as one word.

Now, we pay very little attention to sex on this site, save in the context of evolution, or in relation to the sacramental conception of marriage, as revealed by the Holy Mother Church.   And the area of interesting intersection between sexuality and mathematics is surely of measure zero -- at least from our own Platonistic perspective, sub specie which, the truths of mathematics are as independent of mere gender  as they are of species, or of time:  truths that are as true for boys as for girls, nay, for people as for paramecia:  for that indeed is what makes math interesting.

Conceivably, what our surfer had in mind, was rather “math porn”.   For we do, not infrequently, allude to degraded popularisations of physics, philosophy, etc., under the rubrics “physics porn”, “philosophy porn”, etc.;  here the term is purely metaphorical, much the way, in the academic community, “sexy” came to mean “a topic likely to attract lots of students, and to win government grants”.
Yet, oddly, there seems to be no such thing as “math porn” -- math discussed in a popular-populist, smoke-and-mirrors way.   Treatments of the subject for a lay audience tend to be  at worst disappointing, at best  absolutely outstanding, such as the best-selling books by John Allen Paulos or Martin Gardner, or the non-bestselling but even better books by G.H. Hardy, Jacques Hadamard,  Ian Stewart, Morris Kline, or Davis & Hersh.   On the rare occasions when the general-audience press notices some mathematical accomplishment, as (justifiedly)  the proof, not long ago, of the long-outstanding “Fermat’s Last Theorem”, the account is straightforward:  naturally giving no insight into the logic or structure of the accomplishment, for that would be far too difficult, but telling the readers what they need to know, with no fuss about it.   For there to be anything like “math porn”, on a level with the unending and shallow sensationalistic treatment of (say) the Higgs Boson in physics, you would need instead  to have periodic tub-thumping reports of purported proofs (“sightings” of possible proofs, or musings about rumored future proofs), followed by back-to-the-drawing-board retractions, together with a heavy focus on personalities, rivalries, and dish (“Andrew Wiles reveals his private fantasies”).   Oh plus the topic would have to be renamed so as to be headline-ready (just as the Higgs Boringon was dubbed the “God particle”) -- say, “The Erection Theorem” or “The Clitoris Conjecture”.

In sum, for all you “mathsex” stringsearchers out there:  Sorry,  folks, there’s no There there.

As mentioned,  no question of sex sheds any light whatever   upon the transcendent and human-independent content of mathematics, any more than do questions of economics or zoology.   But the practice of mathematics, like anything else (stamp-collecting or what have you) may be glanced at in the context of that multivariate, multifoliate syncrescence known as sexuality.  Here the great English sexologist Havelock Ellis, raised in the Victorian era  and writing in the Edwardian, reports on the results of many an attempt to curb randiness:

Mental exercise … has sometimes been advocated as a method of calming sexual excitement. … Mathematical occupations … have been advocated … as aide to sexual hygiene.
“I have tried mechanical mental work,” a lady writes, “such as solving arithmetical or algebraic problems, but it does no good;  in fact  it seems only to increase the excitement.”
-- Havelock Ellis, Studies in the Psychology of Sex (?1897-?1910), vol. IV, p. 208

(Rather an arresting image, that:  our scholarly maiden diligently working through problems in Noetherian rings, and becoming increasingly tumescent ...)

Let us note, though, that only “mechanical” exercises are here shown to fail: arithmetic, not in the sense of Number Theory, but of long division; algebra, not in the sense of Galois or of André Weil, but of those unpleasant little sentences with x’s in them, relating to draining bathtubs which (against all reason) are simultaneously being replenished from the tap.  These can only cause the mind to wander -- Reason to abandon her throne -- as the Old Adam or the Ancient Eve  reclaim their birthright, and attention descends  beneath the waistband.

POEMA ARANEAE

According to those invaluable blogstats,
someone just found this site by a search on the following Boolean string:

        french poem about spider

Vous êtes le bienvenu(e), monsieurdame !  Et pourtant  To our great confoundment, we are forced to confess, that hitherto  we have had no such offering.  This yawning gap we now hasten to amend, as follows:

Que not’ frère l’araigne
ce tribut ne dédaigne
car il comble un vide:
ce poème arachnoïde

Philological note:
Spiders speak a more classical, even old-fashioned, variety of French, than what you and I learned in class.   Their word for ‘spider’ is the chastely Latinate araigne, from Latin ARANEA (cf. Spanish araña).  The modern bastardization is araignée, which by rights should mean “spiderweb” or maybe “spider-clowder” (though I personally have never witnessed  a clowder of spiders;  they tend to be rather standoffish).
I would also love to report that dédaigne was the subjunctive of an archaic *dédaindre;  but alas, ‘tis not so, it’s dédaigner (from DIGNARI) all the way down.  (Immediately related to our English verb deign, btw, and more distantly to the noun dignity, from the Latin source.)

Dr J hearkens to Vox Populi

After a careful review of the blogstats, we must reluctantly conclude that the themes for which this blog was founded -- to include Cantorian Realism, Trinitarian Minimalism, Mathematical Consilience, and suchlike worthy fare -- is not what most folks are hankering for, after a long day at the lab.  Even the Humble Woodchuck receives fewer visitors than would be his due, for all his furry butt.  No, what the broad masses seem to have a yen for, is T&A -- and I don’t mean Theorems & Axioms.

Accordingly, in reverence to the inevitable, we offer this:

[you must be 21 to view]

And this:

Fifty Shades of Jack Bauer

(We asked his Jackness, if he had any regrets.)

JB:  I do.  When, in Season Seven, Renee Walker slapped me hard across the face, not once but twice, while asking me (patronizingly enough), in an acid voice, whether I “felt that” -- I just walked away, without so much as a parting shot.

I realize now that -- so obvious in retrospect -- I should have…have…

pulled down her fawn lace panties then and there,
and striped her buttocks with my studded belt,
till ridges rose upon that quivering skin
like as the moldwarp’s tunnels ‘cross the mold.

[Lines quoted from the “B” manuscript of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew, omitted from the “A” recension.]

Frontiers of Marketing

Statistics gathered by the kind offices of YouTube and Amazon have enabled us to put together a profile of two quite disparate groups:

(a) those who, having viewed our videos, went on to buy the book
(b) those who, having viewed those same videos, nevertheless failed to buy the book.

The results are intriguing:

                              Bought               Did not buy

Avg. IQ                   240                    63

Distinguishing     callipygian               anencephalic
physical
characteristic

Favorite           Schubert,               “Who Let the Dogs Out”
music          sonata in B-flat

Presidential     Socrates               Donald Trump
candidate

Since there are roughly a thousandfold more potential customers in the latter group than in the former, this presents something of a challenge.

Juicy French sex-scandal

(Non mais --  ça alors … fichtre!  Figurez-vous …)

We commented extensively on the DSK affair,  principally with a view to the role of the American media and legal system in his takedown, though also for an opportunity to be funny.    Here now is a new scandal, this time with no American connection and without international repercussions, yet which I bring to your attention, simply because it is so cinematic -- along the lines of “The Conversation” or “The Parallax View” or “The Spanish Prisoner” (all favorites of mine) -- and also because the U.S. hasn’t had a really toothsome political sex-scandal in a long time (those stupid payoff-to-mistresses and “wide stance” interludes  do not qualify).  This new affaire from France  already reads like a screenplay, even in this sketchy initial report, let alone the wheels-within-wheels developments that are bound to eventuate:

Even that much is almost (not quite) worthy of a niche in the Riemann Conspiracy.

Please do note that this lofty blog -- founded to champion Platonic Realism -- disdains to concern itself with mere sexually sexxxsational sexy sex-related sexiness, being here concerned purely with the principles of Good Government, so well stated by Hammurabi and Solon and guys like that.   Not in the slightest have we been influenced by the blogstats showing that people are finding this site via such searchstrings as
