We by now have several essays in what we have labeled rhetorical analysis, though it might
equally be called depth linguistics,
by analogy with the term depth
psychology (which includes analytic psychology and psychoanalysis): rooting around for the meanings and
motivations burrowing beneath the syntactic surface -- presuppositions, spin,
and the wily enthymeme. The goal
is largely one of public service:
to unmask the squirmy politicians and marketeers.
